Current as of October 9, 2026.

Wiping down the bathroom counter, you spot two small buttons between the outlet slots — TEST and RESET. The kitchen has them; the bedrooms don't. The patio outlet adds TR and WR. Which outlets are actually protected — and how would you know?

The short answer

The buttons mark a GFCI receptacle — a ground-fault circuit interrupter. It watches for a tiny imbalance between current leaving on the hot wire and current returning on the neutral, the signature of current leaking through a person, and trips, cutting power before the shock can turn dangerous. Electrical codes require GFCI protection in specific locations where shock hazards are more likely, including bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas, garages, and outdoor locations. But one device can guard several downstream outlets (additional outlets wired through the GFCI's load terminals, which lose power when the device trips), so \"enough\" comes down to mapping which areas sit behind a working device.

What you're looking at

A GFCI receptacle carries a self-check: TEST simulates a ground fault and should kill power; RESET restores it. But protection isn't always on the wall: many homes use a GFCI breaker, a panel breaker with a test button guarding every outlet on that circuit.

One caution before you assume: a TEST button doesn't always mean GFCI. AFCI receptacles and dual-function AFCI/GFCI breakers carry test buttons too. Read the lettering on the device face or the breaker label — it'll say GFCI, AFCI, or both — so you know which protection you're actually looking at.

The patio outlet's letters are separate functions:

\nGFCI — shock protection by sensing current leaks.
\nTR (tamper-resistant) — shutters that block children from poking objects in; not ground-fault shock protection.
\nWR (weather-resistant) — corrosion-resistant build for rain and humidity. Outlasts the weather; doesn't protect you.

One outlet can carry all three: an outdoor GFCI should be stamped WR (and TR where required), while a patio outlet marked WR and TR with no TEST/RESET buttons is weather-hardened but possibly unprotected. Don't confuse GFCI with AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter): AFCI watches for dangerous arcing to prevent fires; GFCI watches for current leaking toward a person to prevent shocks. Different jobs.

What the device actually does

Inside a Class A GFCI, a sensor compares current leaving on the hot with current returning on the neutral. When current leaks, through water, damaged insulation, or a person, the numbers diverge, and at an imbalance of roughly 5 milliamps (five thousandths of an amp) the device trips and cuts power, helping reduce the risk of serious electric shock.

It needs no ground wire: the comparison happens between hot and neutral only. That's the reason a GFCI receptacle can still protect old two-prong outlets in ungrounded houses. The CPSC's GFCI fact sheet (Doc #99) estimates GFCIs could prevent over two-thirds of the roughly 300 in-home electrocutions it cites, plus thousands of shock and burn injuries yearly — the CPSC's standing estimate.

What a professional checks, in order

A pro answers \"do I have enough.\" A buttoned kitchen outlet says nothing about the space under a raised house. Much of Lafitte and Jean Lafitte sits in raised homes, but a raised underfloor area is not automatically the \"crawl space at or below grade level\" that NEC 210.8(A)(4) calls out. Each space needs a careful look at its actual conditions and classification.

\nRequired locations. NEC 2020 210.8(A) requires GFCI protection on 125V through 250V, single-phase receptacles (rated 150V or less to ground) at: bathrooms; garages and qualifying accessory buildings; outdoors (except not-readily-accessible receptacles on dedicated snow-melting/deicing/pipeline-heating circuits); crawl spaces at or below grade; all basements (new in 2020); kitchen receptacles serving countertops; receptacles within 6 feet of the top inside edge of a sink's bowl; boathouses; within 6 feet of the outside edge of tubs and shower stalls; laundry areas; and indoor damp or wet locations. Louisiana adopts NEC 2020 statewide (La. Admin. Code tit. 17, § I-115(A)).
\nLouisiana's amendments. Louisiana amends NEC 210.8(F) — the outdoor-outlets section, not the dwelling-unit receptacle list in 210.8(A) — to exempt HVAC equipment from that GFCI requirement (\"Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection shall not be required on HVAC equipment\"). The state also adds Item (G): GFCI protection for 125V, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles on single-phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground, where welders are operated for electrical hand tools or portable lighting equipment. No New Orleans–specific GFCI amendment surfaced in research — confirm with the local AHJ.
\nTest every device. Press TEST, confirm the power dies, press RESET. Eaton's instructions: \"Press the TEST button (then RESET button) every month to assure proper operation.\" UL and ESFI recommend monthly testing, plus a test after electrical storms. If a GFCI does not interrupt power during testing or will not reset, stop using the affected outlet and have a licensed electrician investigate. A device that won't reset isn't necessarily failed. It may be responding to an existing fault downstream.

Here's something a lot of homeowners don't know: newer GFCIs check themselves. Since 2015, UL standards have required automatic self-monitoring. The standard calls for a check at least every three hours, and some manufacturers go far beyond it — Leviton says every three seconds, for example. If the self-check finds trouble, the device is supposed to tell on itself: it trips and won't reset, or it flashes an end-of-life warning. Either way, that's a replacement, not a reset. But none of that replaces pressing TEST once a month. The automatic check can't prove every part of the device will actually interrupt power when it counts.

There's a newer breed worth knowing about, especially for anything that can't afford to sit dead. Leviton and Legrand both make GFCIs with an audible trip alarm — if the device trips, it beeps. That matters for a freezer or sump pump on a garage GFCI, where a silent trip could go unnoticed for days. Leviton went further with a Wi-Fi Smart GFCI: it sends a notification to your phone through the My Leviton app, the moment it trips, and tells you exactly which outlet in the house tripped. The app deliberately can't switch the outlet on or off — it only reports. For a camp or a second home, that's the difference between knowing in minutes and finding out when the food thaws.

\nMap what each device guards. Have your electrician map which outlets each GFCI protects: one bathroom device often guards the second bath, the garage, and the patio. \"Enough\" means every required location sits behind some working device.
\nCheck the panel and outdoor hardware. Read breaker labels for GFCI markings and test buttons. Breaker-type protection is common after panel upgrades. Outdoors, confirm WR-rated devices with listed in-use (\"bubble\") covers on 15/20A receptacles in wet locations, per NEC 406.9.
\nFrame older work honestly. An older installation may have been compliant when originally installed. Whether upgrades are required depends on its history, applicable local requirements, and the scope of any new electrical work. Touching it changes the answer: replacing a receptacle in a location the current Code lists for GFCI triggers GFCI protection on the replacement (NEC 406.4(D)), and any permitted renovation or alteration brings the touched work up to today's requirements.

The boundary: look, don't touch

What anyone can do without tools or training: press the TEST and RESET buttons once a month exactly as the manufacturer instructs, read the TR and WR stamps on receptacles, and read breaker labels in the panel. That's operating the device as designed — not electrical work.

Licensed-electrician work: installing or replacing any receptacle or breaker, opening the panel past its cover, mapping which outlets sit downstream of each GFCI, or diagnosing a device that won't test or reset. Miswired line and load terminals can leave downstream outlets unguarded while the buttons still click. This kind of work can trigger code, licensing, and permit requirements depending on the jurisdiction. When in doubt, have a licensed electrician handle it and verify the local requirements.

Permits: Louisiana's electrical code is based on the state-adopted NEC, but permits, licensing requirements, inspections, and enforcement are handled locally and can vary by parish or municipality. For example, New Orleans requires electrical permits for covered electrical work through a properly licensed electrical contractor. Other jurisdictions may use different permit or filing procedures. Depending on the jurisdiction and scope of work, an electrical permit, filing, or inspection may be required. Your contractor should confirm the applicable requirements before beginning.

5 questions to ask your contractor

Which required locations in my home are protected, and which device guards each one?
Do any GFCIs protect downstream outlets, and is the line/load wiring order correct?
Are my outdoor receptacles WR-rated with proper in-use covers, and tamper-resistant where required?
Do I have breaker-type GFCI protection, and when was each device last tested or replaced?
Will you pull the electrical permit (or parish filing) for this work?
