Walk through a Greater New Orleans house and the outlets change faces room by room: two-slot outlets in an older bedroom, the familiar three-hole kind in the living room, a sideways slot in the kitchen, a big strange face in the laundry room, a round one with curved blades in the garage. None of it is decorative. Here's what you're looking at, room by room.

The short answer: standardized outlet shapes act like keys for different electrical ratings and conductor arrangements. Incompatible configurations are designed not to mate. The shape tells you what plug the receptacle accepts — not whether the wiring and grounding behind it are correct.

Bedrooms and living rooms: two slots, three openings, and replacement options

The 1-15R is a 15-amp, 125-volt, two-wire nongrounding configuration with no ground opening. Polarized versions have one wider neutral slot; some older two-slot devices may look different. These receptacles are common in older homes, but the face alone does not establish whether another grounding means exists behind the wall.

Its grounded successor, the 5-15R, adds the U-shaped ground hole below the same two slots — the standard outlet.

Two-prong outlets: what are the real options? A two-prong receptacle isn't automatically a code violation just for being old — but it gives a three-prong plug nowhere to land its ground. Where no equipment grounding conductor exists at the box, NEC 406.4(D)(2) gives an electrician three replacement paths: another nongrounding receptacle; a GFCI receptacle marked \"No Equipment Ground\"; or a grounding-type receptacle fed through GFCI protection and marked both \"GFCI Protected\" and \"No Equipment Ground.\" Read those labels carefully — GFCI protection is not an equipment ground, and some equipment specifically requires one. Replacement work can also pull in current TR, WR, GFCI, or AFCI requirements, though the Code excepts some like-for-like nongrounding replacements. Which path fits your house is a per-box determination, not a blanket rule.

The ground is the real story. The U-shaped hole on 120-volt outlets connects to the equipment grounding conductor: a dedicated lane that carries fault current back toward the source so the overcurrent protective device can open the circuit.

Kitchen: the T-slot and the 20-amp circuit behind it

The 5-20R adds a T-shaped neutral slot — a vertical slot with a horizontal crossbar, so it accepts both 15-amp and 20-amp plugs. Its face identifies a 20-amp receptacle, but you can't read the whole branch-circuit design off the face: a 20-amp circuit feeding two or more receptacles may wear ordinary 5-15R faces, so a normal-looking outlet doesn't prove a 15-amp breaker behind it.

A face with TEST and RESET buttons is most often ground-fault protection — the familiar GFCI — though arc-fault and dual-function receptacles can wear the same buttons on the same 5-15R face; our guide to GFCI protection (https://abestpros.com/resources/test-reset-protected) goes deeper on what those buttons do.

Laundry room and range: three-wire versus four-wire

The old 3-wire dryer outlet (10-30R, 30A 125/250V): two angled hot slots and an L-shaped neutral slot — a 3-wire nongrounding configuration. Its 4-wire replacement (14-30R, 30A 125/250V): two vertical hot blades, an L-shaped neutral, and a D-shaped ground above. Same pairing at the range, larger: the old 3-wire 10-50R (50A, 125/250V, 3-wire nongrounding) and the current 4-wire 14-50R (50A, 125/250V, 4-wire grounding) — but don't assume the 50-amp faces are just scaled-up copies of the 30-amp ones; the 10-50R's neutral slot isn't the same L-shape, so check the NEMA reference chart rather than the pattern. The 14-50R is also common at RV parks and for some plug-connected EV chargers, though EV equipment comes in other configurations and hardwired versions too.

The old 3-wire circuits had no dedicated ground lane. The neutral did double duty, grounding the appliance frame, so a loose neutral could leave the dryer frame energized. The 4-wire design gives the ground its own conductor — a safety redesign, not a new shape.

The 2020 NEC still permits the grounded conductor to serve this bonding function on a qualifying existing 3-wire branch circuit, but only when all four conditions of the 250.140 exception are met: the right supply (120/240-volt single-phase 3-wire, or the specified 208Y/120-volt), a neutral of at least 10 AWG copper or 8 AWG aluminum, an insulated neutral (or an uninsulated one in SE cable with the circuit originating at the service equipment), and any grounding contacts of receptacles furnished as part of the appliance bonded to the equipment. New branch circuits use a separate equipment grounding conductor.

Garage and workshop: locking configurations

The L14-30R is a 30-amp, 125/250-volt locking configuration with two hot connections, a neutral, and an equipment ground. It is commonly used with portable generators and generator connection equipment — though not only there. Its matching plug inserts and turns to resist accidental disconnection. The L6-30R is a 30-amp, 250-volt locking configuration with two hot connections and an equipment ground — but no neutral. They are not interchangeable.

One thing the twist-lock doesn't do on its own: a portable generator feeding the house needs an interlock kit or transfer switch. The locking receptacle is the connection point, not the whole setup — don't assume the outlet alone makes a generator hookup safe or legal.

Throughout the house: what \"TR\" means

TR means tamper-resistant. Spring-loaded shutters cover both slots and only open when two blades press in together with even pressure — they're designed to resist a single object pushed into one slot, which is why a phone charger can feel stubborn in a new TR outlet. It's a safety feature, not a different voltage configuration.

Louisiana runs the 2020 NEC statewide; NEC 406.12 requires 15- and 20-amp, 125- and 250-volt nonlocking receptacles in the dwelling areas the section names — including attached and detached garages and accessory buildings — to be the listed tamper-resistant type, with listed exceptions. No Louisiana amendment to this section turned up. Looking ahead: the 2023 NEC expands the locations expressly named in this section, including boathouses, mobile homes, manufactured homes, and common areas; the 15- and 20-amp scope remains, and it doesn't extend to the 30- and 50-amp dryer/range receptacles above. Louisiana's 2023 adoption is currently proposed rulemaking — confirm the adopted code edition and applicable transition rules with the local authority before work begins.

USB-equipped and smart receptacles can retain familiar household plug openings while adding charging ports or control features. Check the device's marked rating and specifications rather than assuming every model is the same.

Porches and exterior walls: what \"WR\" means

WR means weather-resistant — but \"WR\" does not replace the correct cover or enclosure. NEC 406.9(A) covers damp locations, including sheltered outdoor locations not subject to beating rain or water runoff: the enclosure must be weatherproof with the plug removed and the cover closed. NEC 406.9(B)(1) covers wet locations, where 15- and 20-amp, 125- and 250-volt receptacles need an enclosure that remains weatherproof whether or not a plug is inserted. An outlet-box hood used for that protection must be listed and identified as extra-duty; other listed products or assemblies that provide the required protection are permitted. The applicable 15- and 20-amp, 125- and 250-volt nonlocking receptacles must also be listed weather-resistant. An exterior receptacle may need both TR and WR features — one marking doesn't substitute for the other.

What a professional checks

The walkthrough runs in a fixed order:

Read the face. The NEMA configuration and the voltage/amperage stamp say what the circuit is supposed to be. Diagnosis starts at the wall.

Match the receptacle to the breaker and the wire. A 15-amp face on a 30-amp breaker is a mismatch, not an upgrade.

Verify the grounding path on two-prong circuits. Determine which replacement options NEC 406.4(D) permits, then apply the protection, TR, and WR requirements that govern that replacement, including applicable exceptions.

Confirm TR where the Code requires it, and WR devices with the appropriate weatherproof cover or enclosure for the location. Read the stamps; don't assume.

Identify the dryer/range generation. An existing three-wire arrangement that qualifies for continued use, or a four-wire arrangement with a separate equipment ground. When plug and receptacle don't match, the pro first checks whether the existing 3-wire installation qualifies to remain under NEC 250.140 and whether the appliance is listed for that connection. If it doesn't qualify, the circuit and receptacle come up to the current 4-wire configuration. Never solve a mismatch with an adapter.

Test the grip. A plug that slides out unusually easily may indicate worn receptacle contacts. Loose connections can create heat, so the receptacle and plug should be evaluated and a worn device replaced.

The boundary: look, don't touch

Reading a stamp, spotting a WR mark, or pressing TEST and RESET per the manufacturer's instructions is fine. That is operating the device, not electrical work. Everything past the cover screws belongs to a licensed electrician: no swapping faces, no re-terminating cords, no filing a plug to fit the wrong outlet.

Permit and inspection requirements vary by authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), especially when work moves beyond device replacement into new wiring or circuit alterations. The authority where the property is located determines what requires a permit or inspection. Confirm that before the work starts.

Five questions to ask your contractor

This room still has 2-prong outlets. Can this circuit be properly grounded?

The new dryer came with a 4-prong cord and the wall outlet is 3-prong. Do we change the cord, the receptacle, or run a new circuit?

Are the outside receptacles weather-resistant devices with the right wet- or damp-location protection?

Which outlets here should be tamper-resistant under the current Code?

This plug falls out of the outlet. Is the receptacle worn?

What's next: tomorrow's guide takes on why breakers trip — whether it's the breaker, a bad device, or the wires behind the wall, including how to diagnose a dead outlet safely.
